Hardly imaginable-the small furry Dassie’s (Procavia capensis) are closely related to elephants and manatees. Their appearance is  very similar to the groundhog we know. The hare-sized pets love sunbathing, especially on the South African Table Mountain and they are world champions in rock climbing on smooth rock. The animals urine supplies the miracle drug known as "Hyrazeum", which was used in early times to combat nerve disorders.

Guinea Fowls (Numididae) are only found in Africa and inhabit both savannah and forests. The average size is about 45 cm in height with a weight of one kilogram. Their strong beak is made for digging. The claw-reinforced feet fulfill the same purpose.

Chameleons (Chamaeleonidae) have a 360 ° panoramic view and can move their eyes independently of each other. Some chameleon species can change their color, with the advantage of absorbing sunlight better, or confusing attackers. Two chameleons can communicate with their skin color. Dark colors signal attack readiness, bright colors on the other hand show readiness for mating. They catch their prey with the tongue by sucking it with underpressure. The majority of the chameleon species are located on the island of Madagascar.

The social jackal (Canis adustus) is a wolf-like wild dog. He has a loyal soul, lives very locally in close family associations and fixed marriage until the end of his life. Wild jackals get up to 6 years old, in human custody they can even achieve a double life expectancy. The omnivores communicate through a number of  bell and howl sounds. Fights within the pack are very rare.

Turtoises (Testudinata) can age up to 200 years, depending on the species and size, and are among the longest living animals in the world, along with the Greenland shark and the Greenland whale. Only one in 1000 eggs reaches adulthood. The sex is determined by the ambient temperature of the eggs. The turtle tank, which is made of bone, grows automatically with the size of the turtle. These reptiles have existed for at least 200 million years and have lived with dinosaurs.

Snails (gastropods) are molluscs without skeleton and include an estimated 100,000 different species worldwide. However, there are still differences between slugs and shell snails. They can move through a rhythmic tightening of muscles. The spiral-shaped house is made of lime, is constantly carried by the snail and serves as protection. In case of danger, snails slip into their house and close it with a lime lid. In case of damage, the house can be repaired again. Snails are common throughout the world and - depending on the species – get up to 10 years old.

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) can climb trees and swim excellently. They have an exceptionally good hearing and tactile sensation. The raccoon descends from North America. In 1934 two racoons were exposed in Germany for the first time. Today they populate the entire German middle mountain region within only 50 years. Raccoons especially like to eat bananas, grapes and other sweet fruits.
